RuPay credit card UPI charges: who pays and how much

Individuals are not shown a separate UPI transaction fee in the merchant-pricing sources checked. Merchants can pay MDR plus GST, but there is no single rate: category, turnover, acquiring bank, and provider all matter.

Quick answer

RuPay credit card UPI fees are merchant-specific

Individual

No separate UPI fee

The merchant-pricing sources describe MDR and GST as deductions from the merchant settlement. Normal credit-card account terms still apply.

Merchant

Variable MDR + GST

The final rate depends on the merchant category code, turnover, acquiring bank, and payment provider.

This is different from bank-account-funded UPI. Credit-card UPI uses the UPI payment experience, but the money comes from a linked RuPay credit card and follows separate merchant-pricing rules.

Thresholds

What happens above Rs 2,000?

Why there is no universal RuPay UPI MDR rate

The acquiring bank assigns a merchant category code, or MCC. That code determines the line of business used for pricing. Canara Bank's schedule effective 1 June 2026 illustrates the variation: 0.50% for public-sector insurance, 0.70% for several listed sectors, 0.75% for fuel, 1.10% for supermarkets and convenience stores, and 1.75% for unlisted categories. Those are Canara Bank's indicative rates, not a nationwide tariff.
